Physical Education Curriculum - Primary School

Intent, Implementation, Impact

Learning Journey

  • The primary curriculum follows the programmes and breadths of studies outlined in the National Curriculum

  • The primary curriculum focuses on the most appropriate activities for the pupil’s developmental level and needs and is to be taught in a creative manner to allow for the needs of the young people.

  • Fundamental movement skills will be taught through the units to develop balance, agility and co-ordination

  • The curriculum is based on activities that are functional, sensory and experiential, whilst also providing stimulating and challenging learning environments.

  • Repetition is important to allow the pupils to internalise the physical and cognitive tasks.

  • The focus of teaching physical education in this curriculum is to give the pupils opportunities to:

o  Develop simple single actions and use a number of these actions consecutively

o  Develop and improve basic control and co-ordination of these actions and movements

o  Develop a small range of reactions to different stimuli and respond more consistently

o  Begin to develop an element of purpose or intent in some actions

Physical Education Curriculum - Secondary School

  • The secondary curriculum follows the programmes and breadths of studies of the National Curriculum and is a follow on from Key Stage 2

  • Schemes of work are progressive and allow pupils to develop skills within various sports

  • Fundamental movement skills will be taught through the units to develop balance, agility and co-ordination. The Learning Journey shows how these are sequenced through the years

  • Key Stage 3 & 4 pupils are also taught Health Related Fitness in our fitness gym including how to lead an active and healthy life, the effects exercise has on the body both short and long term, and how to plan appropriate exercise programs.

All Year 10 students are offered Entry Level Physical Education and if appropriate are entered for the Entry Level Certificate.  This qualification is made up of practical performance from four sports.  This is worth 80% of the total Entry Level Certificate.  Also, students will be required to analyse performances which makes up 20% of the qualification.

At Key Stage 4 students are given PE as an option for further study to gain either a vocational or GCSE qualification
